December 2008 GML
Rotary is an organization of people who care, about their homes, their communities and each other. And caring is what family is all about. Family is what makes a place home. Family is what’s really important in life. The Rotary family encompasses the family of every Rotarian- spouses, widows and widowers, children and parents including the relatives of deceased Rotarians. Past RI President Jonathan Majiyagbe initiated and introduced the concept of Rotary Family in the year 2004 and for the first time the RI Board designated December as Family month to appear on the Rotary calendar. His intention was to Lend a Hand to families in their communities, particularly those in need of special assistance. He wished every club and district to form a family of Rotary committee to develop innovative ways to enhance the atmosphere of warmth and caring within our local Rotary families.

Paul Harris wrote in “My Road to Rotary” In 1948, “To the members of the small group which came together in the big city of Chicago, Rotary was like an oasis in the desert.” Harris formed a club that created a sense of family to provide an atmosphere of caring and community that became the bedrock of Rotary. Since Rotary’s beginning with the original four founders, the organization has become a “world family” with members from all walks of life in 168 countries.
