Description: Improve the educational opportunities for underprivileged children in rural India by funding the expansion of a school for 500 boys and girls. The school, which is situated next to a physical rehabilitation center, will be able to accommodate students with special needs by making the entire structure handicap accessible. Currently, classes are conducted in one building, but the project will increase that number to include a science lab, computer lab, sports facility and activity room. The Rotary Club of Kolhapur will donate US $20,000 and will oversee the completion of the project. The project seeks Marathi or Hindi-speaking volunteers to advise on and coordinate construction.

 
Bijapur Rural — W05393 PDF Print E-mail

Description: Water supplied to Sainik School Bijapur is not potable and puts 700 children at risk of infection and illness. Many children already suffer from gastrointestinal disorders, which continually disrupt their lives and education. The project will bring safe drinking water to the school. Civic authorities will maintain the clean water supply and the Rotary Club of Bijapur Rural will contribute US$500 to the project.

Description: In the small village of Dudhondi, there are few basic services and most of the population live in poverty. The secondary school is full of hard-working, bright students, but their concentration is often disrupted due to crowded seating in classrooms. Students must sit on broken benches, with three or four to a bench meant for only two. The Rotary Club of Vishrambag would like to provide 100 new benches so that students will be more comfortable, which will encourage them to attend school and participate in class. Over 500 students will benefit from this project.

Description: There are no medical facilities available in the village of Haripur and no access to transportation after 21:00. Infant and maternal mortality rates are high because of the lack of medical equipment and the unsanitary conditions in which pregnant women must give birth. A government agency is providing the building space for a clinic and the Rotary Club of Vishrambag aims to provide the facility with equipment to make deliveries significantly safer for mothers and babies.

Description: The Rotaract Club of Ponda would like to help 10 schools obtain public address systems. The public address system is a link to all classrooms and will provide an easy means to communicate to all classes. This will enable teachers and students to spend more time on studies. During the three month rainy season common assemblies cannot be conducted outside and the public address system will be an excellent way to communicate. It will also be useful during public functions, gatherings, and sports events.

Description: The Anand Ashram C. School serves the neediest members of Bhatkal, a remote area in North Karnataka, India. This secondary school is three years old and still needs necessities such as a science lab, a library, and AV equipment. The Rotary Club of Bhatkal intends to acquire library materials for the school. The school welcomes donations of textbooks in English, Kannada, and Hindi for secondary students.

Description: Most residents in the small village of Haripur are impoverished laborers, and education is a luxury they cannot afford. The Rotary Community Corps of Haripur has been conducting vocational classes to provide women with practical skills to break out of poverty. The Rotary Club of Vishrambag is working with the RCC to provide five new sewing machines for sewing and tailoring training.
