The first Rotary club to be organized outside an English-speaking country was established in Havana, Cuba, 29 April 1916, with 22 charter members. The club was admitted to Rotary on 1 June 1916.
During 1923, the Rotary Club of Havana celebrated its seventh anniversary, in what became a very busy year. The club sponsored a carnival attended by more than 1,500 children, won a prohibition against bullfighting in Cuba, worked to get the city’s water sanitized and properly purified, and obtained pavement repairs in certain areas.
By the time the RI Convention was held in Havana, 9-14 June 1940, 42 of the 48 clubs that had been chartered in Cuba were still active. Another 20 clubs would be chartered thereafter, ending with the Rotary Club of San Cristobal, on 16 October 1957.
Rotary clubs in Cuba produced four RI directors – Mario Nuñoz Mesa, 1922-23; Felix Silva Fernandez, 1936-37; Manuel Galigarcia Hernández, 1942-43; and Horacio Navarrete, 1953-54. All clubs in Cuba were terminated by 31 January 1979.
In recent years, it has become customary for the incoming trustee chair of The Rotary Foundation to establish goals that will motivate Rotarians to action and provide a framework for measuring our achievement.
In developing goals for the Foundation in 2008-09, I considered what broad objectives could best make our Foundation even stronger and more prominent today. John Kenny, elected as the 2009-10 RI president, told Rotarians at the convention that it was special honor to be the first Rotarian from Scotland to be president in the history of Rotary.
John Kenny, a member of the Rotary Club of Grangemouth, Central, Scotland, was elected as the 2009-10 president of Rotary International at the fourth plenary session of the RI Convention in Los Angeles on Wednesday. In his acceptance remarks, Kenny expressed his gratitude for the support and encouragement that he and his wife, June, have received.
"We have come from a small country of five million people with three Rotary districts," he said, "and it is therefore a special honor to be the first Rotarian from Scotland to be president in the history of Rotary -- and only the fifth from the British Isles."
All districts (and each low-income country within a district) located in low-income countries are eligible to submit 2009-10 applications to compete for an Academic-Year or Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship to be funded by the Scholarships Fund Pool for Low-Income Countries. This opportunity is available regardless of a district’s financial contributions to The Rotary Foundation (TRF) or available District Designated Funds (DDF).
Applications must be received by 1 October 2008 to be considered for this world-competitive opportunity. In November 2008, a committee appointed by the Trustees will review all applications submitted in order to select the approximately 32 most qualified applicants to receive a 2009-10 Ambassadorial Scholarship.
